Devastating News on UPS Incident: Death Toll Increases to 13

The tally of fatalities from the freight aircraft that ignited and went down has now reached 13, according to latest statements.

Mayor's Statement

“On my way to the Workers’ vigil, I was informed of a thirteenth victim that lost their life as a result of the UPS flight 2976 accident,” wrote the local official in a public communication. “My heart are with the loved ones, companions and colleagues of all who were lost in this week’s tragedy. We will overcome this as one.”

Casualties Named

An announcement from UPS listed the pilots aboard the aircraft as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.

“Our sympathies reach out to every staff member who has been touched and all in our community community – assisting you and guaranteeing you get the care and aid you need is our focus,” the organization’s statement expressed.

Investigation Details

Government authorities announced that the jet’s wing ignited and an power plant fell off shortly after liftoff from the airfield, resulting in the aircraft to crash and explode into a inferno.

The NTSB has said it is examining the aircraft’s service record, that was in Texas for maintenance several weeks prior to the crash.

Aviation information showed the jet was on the ground in San Antonio, Texas from early September to last week.

“We are aware that this aircraft was there in San Antonio,” said an official on the following day, without a exact time frame. “We will look at all elements of maintenance that was completed, including the Texas visit, straight to the date of the journey.”

Recovery of Vital Items

The pilot’s recorder and data recorder were retrieved, and the power plant was found on the airfield.

The recorders – known as flight recorders – were designed to withstand collision damage and intense temperatures from infernos, and they seemed to be intact when located among the remains. Authorities plan on examining information from the black boxes.

Jet’s final recorded information showed an altitude of 475 feet and a velocity of that speed ahead of the impact.

Maintenance Background

Based on FAA documents dated 18 September, a fracture on a part in the tank area needed maintenance.

Headquartered in Singapore ST Engineering, which indicated it offers aircraft servicing for the company’s jet and operates a maintenance center in San Antonio, refused to provide remarks, but stated it would cooperate fully when relevant authorities contacted it.

Services Resume

At the same time, the facility operations restarted Wednesday night with its Next Day Air also known as night sort operation, official Jim Mayer said. Each of the three tarmacs at Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport were also reopened.

The UPS package handling facility in Louisville is the company’s biggest. The center hires more than 20,000 workers in the area, manages numerous flights each day and sorts over a huge volume of packages each hour.

Local Support

A gathering was held on the late afternoon of that date by the local worker’s group, which represents staff at the Louisville airport, the company’s largest air cargo hub.

The union chapter, which stands for staff, began the vigil with a period of reflection at 5.14pm, the estimated time of the crash previously.

“This tragedy was so unexpected, so surprising,” the leader spoke to the crowd of 200. “No one had a moment to say goodbye to each of those who we have mourned.”
