New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
